Many people with disabilities can be more independent with the help of simple equipment. A local person in the community can make most of this equipment. For example a carpenter or someone who works with metal. Sometimes equipment is made in small automobile repair shops or by people who build houses. These people usually need four kinds of information:

  • The problem that the person has and the reason for using this equipment
  • What the disabled person wants to be able to do with the equipment
  • a picture of what you want
  • How to take measurements so the equipment “fits” the person who will use it?

This manual gives some ideas about the most important simple equipment. It is suggested to talk to the disabled person and their family first to understand what their needs are. Do not give people equipment because you think it is needed. Sometimes people need equipment only for a short time. As they recover, they may need other equipment or none at all. Other people will equipment for their whole live.
